recap on nigerian idol season 5

Lagos was on fire as we reached the climax of the Nigerian Idol Season 5 auditions. It’s Las Gidi and the home of the perfect blend of talents and potentials in the country.

Several of the performances were simply breath-taking while the not-so-good ones were NOT-SO-GOOD! Lagos was not without its typical drama. But the heat was definitely turned up so much that we even had a wildcard entry into the top 100. Here is how it went.

One of our favourite moments was Sopriye turning the judges into backup singers as he performed R.Kelly’s ‘Storm Is Over’. When that happens, there can be only one end result- Golden Ticket! Shapera was completely overwhelmed when she was awarded a golden ticket. Lost on how to express her excitement, she went down, arms wide, in slow motion like some theatrical special effect.

The battle to get to the Top 100 continued with contestants who spilled over a two-day audition. Dede was not impressed with Joseph Morgan although we felt his take on Morgan’s performance was a tad exaggerated. Akinpelu felt singing worship songs in his room made him a musician. Dede wished he had a whip to send him out! Olamilekan probably used a war song to rehearse for his auditions and was comically applauded by the judges. Abdulgafar damaged Akon’s ‘Sunny Day’. Hell, that tune was no good even for a rainy day.

This would not be complete without the audition of the Oshodi Twins as Kehinde was given a wildcard entry into the Nigerian Idol when all he came to do initially was support his twin. His brother also got 3 yeses from the judges after singing Eminem’s musical hit, ‘Monster’. The duo were even better when they sang together. Fate always has a way of pulling stunts!

Sandra brought something extremely different to the Nigerian Idol auditions as she performed a beautiful piece of classical music. The judges went deep into their ‘she wasn’t going through’ phase – she almost attacked Darey when she was handed the golden ticket.

What better way to end the auditions than with the diversely talented Ogunrombi Kunle who combined RnB perfectly with Fuji! This is by far our best Idol moment of the season! He hypnotized the judges with his excellent musical abilities when he as Dede said ‘fugirized’ John Legend’s ‘All of Me’; and they had no choice but to surrender the golden ticket to him. How could we forget his ‘shoki’ which by the way was totally on fleek!

Enthralling, captivating and exciting! Ten golden tickets from Lagos! 28 golden tickets from all the auditions! Nigerian Idol turns on its 5th season as the best of Nigeria’s music talents vie to take home the coveted title.

The countdown starts now.
